Police Detains 4 Murder Suspects

Police is holding four suspects who beat to death their friend, a 16-year old Jean Pierre Niyomugabo in Rukomo sector, Kamonyi district on Saturday.

The suspects include Oustin Ngirukwayo, Jean Marie Vianney Habarurema, Maurice Uzabakiriho and Veduste Tuyisenge while their colleagues Bertin Murwanashyaka, Francois Niyoyita and Jean Uwitonze are on run by Police following their escape from the village.

Police reports that the group killed their colleague whom they accused of stealing minerals. The four suspects are under Police custody at Taba Police station.

The Southern Region Spokesperson, Superintendent Hubert Gashagaza urged residents to refrain from illegal mining because it will always bring misunderstandings resulting in death or assault.

He reminded that illegal mining is a criminal act that is punishable by the Rwandan law just like any other crimes.

He said illegal mining had in the past been one of the challenges in the region.

“We laid preventive strategies to address the issue and with collective efforts we managed to address it. We will continue to enhancing community policing in bid to sensitize the public so as to avoid crimes of any kind,” added Supt Gashagaza.

Supt. Gashagaza urged the public to share timely information with security organs and other concerned authorizes on illegal miners as well as other crimes associated with it.

If convicted the suspects will be punishable under article 140 of the penal code which states murder is intentional killing of a person and shall be punishable by life imprisonment.
