The Chairman of the Eastern Africa Police Chiefs Cooperation Organisation (EAPCCO), Lt. Gen Kale Kayihura on February 28 paid a courtesy visit to Rwanda National Police to assess the implementation of the resolutions adopted by regional police chiefs during the 14th Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Kampala late last year.

Lt. Gen Kayihura, who is also the Inspector General of the Uganda Police Force, described Rwanda National Police (RNP) as an exemplary force, which other regional forces should copy to effectively deal with the security threats.

“Rwanda National Police is in many respects exemplary despite the fact that it’s younger than many of the Police Forces in the region. They have registered significant strides,” Lt. Gen Kayihura said in reaction to the implementation status report presented by Rwanda National Police.

Rwanda National Police has implemented almost all the resolutions including establishing units to deal with specific crime areas like cyber and financial crime and fighting terrorism.

The RNP is also in the final stages of extending the I-24/7 Interpol communication tool to all outlets.

The1-24/7 is an information sharing strategy that connects all Police institutions across the world with the purpose of jointly fighting cross border crimes such as human and drug trafficking, motor vehicle theft, among others, and tracking down criminals wherever they may be.

“I have no doubt that Rwanda National Police has made serious strides in fighting transnational crime and working together to build strength,” he added.

He paid tribute to his predecessor and Rwanda counterpart, Inspector General of Police, Emmanuel K. Gasana for his resilience and for implementing all the decisions of the previous AGM during his tenure.
