The number of Rwandans with access to safe drinking water increased by 10% between 2005 and 2011 according to the National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda (NISR), but fewer people are getting safe drinking water for free.
In a report released Thursday the NISR stated that the proportion of the Rwanda population using safe drinking water rose from 77% to 87% in the last five years.
The report, which used data from the latest Integrated Household Living Conditions Survey (EICV3) found the number of Rwandans using surface water (rivers or lakes) as drinking water decreased from 18% to 12% between 2005 and 2011.
βThe good news is that rural households can now reach an improved water source more quickly than they could five years ago,β the report stated.
However, the same report revealed the number of households that receive their drinking water for free has decreased significantly.
Statistics show the number of Rwanda households who access potable water without paying in remote areas fell from 81% to 69% between 2005 and 2011, indicating that more work needs to be done to assure all Rwandans have access to reliable sources of water free of cost.
