In 2012, Belgium Government through its Development Cooperation Program (CTB) supported about 16,834 vulnerable families in five Districts of Rwanda namely Nyamagabe, Nyaruguru, Huye, Gisagara and Ngororero.
€ 5 Million valuing about Rwf 4 billion were used in giving small livestock to small farmers and vulnerable households in the Districts to help them graduate from unfavorable poverty and malnutrition.
Beneficiaries from Huye are 3048, Nyamagabe 3024, Gisagara 3648, Ngororero 2970, while Nyaruguru beneficiaries counted 4144.
Dr. Fabrice Ndayisenga, the Director of Small Stock Program at Rwanda Agriculture Board has said since 2009, five Districts with vulnerable families were selected so that they distributed small animals like sheep, pigs, goats and rabbits.
He said beneficiaries will be able to get manure for family small farms like kitchen gardens and generates income.
The access to small stock among poor families will reduce the poverty vulnerability among residents.
According to the latest statistics 44.9% of the population lives below poverty threshold in Rwanda and agriculture still employs more than 85% (est. 2011).
