About 19 years after genocide against Tutsi in Rwanda, land belonging to some survivors especially orphans is still occupied by other people that returned from exile lateron.
Orphans in Kirehe district are faced with challenges of repossessing their land since it was occupied when they were still young.
Claire Uwantege one of the orphans, lives in Kirehe district, Nyabigega sector, she has a small piece of land measuring 86m by 55m though her parents had a much larger cultivable land.
Speaking to IGIHE Uwantege said that she is disappointed by district authorities especially the Mayor Murayire Protais that promise to help her regain her land in July 2012 but uptoday nothing has happened.
Uwantege said that, the local government distributed the land of her parents to the people in 1998, everyone knew that she still living but I do not understand the why!
Addressing IGIHE, the mayor of Kirehe said that he knows about the problem of Uwantege and they are finding an appropriate solution.
We have around 35 orphans who are opposite the same problem as Uwantege; we will try to find a solution which is not affecting anyone.”
