The Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR), Mr Hassan Bubacar Jallow, said the search for the most wanted mastermind of the 1994 Rwanda Genocide, Mr Felicien Kabuga, has been scaled up and extended to other countries other than Kenya.
Kabuga is among the remaining fugitives linked to the 1994 genocide despite some of them being as elusive as ever; it was announced this week.
“All information we had in the past linked Kabuga to Kenya, but we are now looking for him elsewhere, especially in Africa”, he said when addressing reporters as the Tribunal completed the trial phase of its mandate.
He said contacts with the Kenyan authorities as to the whereabouts of the Rwandan businessman, who has a $5 million price on his head, were still going on, noting, however, that ICTR’s focus now was not just on Kenya.
“We had some cooperation (with Kenya) to confirm reports of his presence there. But the ultimate objective is to arrest him in whatever country,” he said, pleading for full cooperation with all states in securing the arrest and transfer of the most famous fugitive.
If apprehended, the alleged mastermind and other remaining suspects would likely be tried in Kigali where the remaining cases would be transferred.
The tribunal, established in 1994 to prosecute perpetrators of the Rwanda genocide, would wind up business at the end of 2014.
