Police Launches Hygiene Campaign

The Rwanda National Police (RNP) in partnership with the City of Kigali (COK) has launched a three-month campaign aimed at promoting sanitation and hygiene in the city.

The campaign dubbed “Keep Kigali Clean and Green” kicked off on December 11 at Nyamirambo Stadium.

During the three month time, different activities aimed at maintaining the hygiene and the overall beautification of the city will be conducted in different area of the capital.

It will include planting of gardens, establishing pavements and retaining walls.

It will also include taping waters from houses and constructing terraces to prevent soil erosion.

The Inspector General of Police, Emmanuel K. Gasana lauded Kigali residents for their efforts in the beautification of the city, but appealed to them to maintain the commitment to make Kigali cleaner and attractive.

He asked residents to join hands with the Rwanda National Police and the City of Kigali to prevent anything or anyone from destroying the already achieved sanitation and hygienic activities.

At the end of the campaign, the overall best sectors will be awarded, the IGP disclosed.

The awarding is part of the RNP’s strategy to promote sanitation and hygiene and to further beautify the city.

Mr. Fidel Ndayisaba, the mayor of Kigali commended the good partnership between the city and the Rwanda National Police and the latter’s efforts in promoting human security.

“Kigali is among the best cleanest cities worldwide. We have so many foreigners who come here to purposely witness the cleanliness in Kigali and also borrow a leaf.

“In this way, it is to the benefit of us Rwandans because these people spend money when they come,” the mayor observed.

He appealed to everyone to respect city hygiene rules including dropping waste in to dustbins. Littering waste attracts a fine of Rwf10, 000.

This is not the first time Rwanda National Police get involved in human security activities as the force last year planted trees on more than 300 hectares countrywide.

In partnership with the Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA), Rwanda National Police also trained about 180 police officers on environmental law enforcement and environmental management as means to further conserve the surrounding.
