Police warns over drunk-driving amid increased operations

The operations are part of the efforts to prevent or minimize the major causes of road accidents and loss of lives.

The 19 drunk motorists paraded to the media on Thursday, December 9, were arrested in separate operations conducted between December 5th and 8th.

Nepomscene Ndayizigiye admitted that he was at the time riding a motorcycle going back home at about 11pm, drunk.

Xavier Hagenimana, was also arrested in Nyabugogo after he tested 7 millitres of blood alcoholic content.

The maximum blood alcoholic content for one to drive or ride is 0.8 millitres

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rene Irere, the spokesperson for the Traffic and Road Safety department advised motorists to put safety first and avoid anything that can result into accidents including impaired driving.

“People arrested driving or riding under the influence of alcohol have been paraded many times and such behaviours are among major causes of fatal accidents. We advise them, as usual, to change their thinking and behaviours, do the right thing to avoid driving when they drink or drink but avoid driving, to prevent accidents and save lives,” said SSP Irere.

He warned of strengthened operations against violation of traffic rules and regulations, particularly people who drive or ride while drunk.
