Two Arrested Over Motorcycle Theft

Two men have been arrested in Rushashi Sector in Gakenke District for allegedly stealing a motorcycle.

The duo, Jean d’Amour Munezero, 30 from Kamonyi District and and Martin Nkurunziza 26 from Bugesera District, were arrested red-handed with the stolen motorcycle in Rulindo District, on December 1.

They are currently held at Shyorongi Police Station.

They were captured by motorcycle operators at Rushashi centre in Gakenke District.

However, motorcycle operators who captured the duo, at the time didn’t know that the motorcycle had been stolen as they only accused them of moving on a motorcycle without helmets.

It later turned out that they were traveling on a stolen motorcycle after they handed them over to police.

Supt Francis Gahima, the Northern Region Police Spokesperson thanked the motorcyclists for the noble action to capture and report people who violate traffic rules.

The suspects confessed to the crime, saying that they had planned it for a period of time.

If convicted, the suspects will be sentenced between six months and two years and pay a fine of two to five times the value of the stolen motorcycle as stipulated under article 300 of the Rwandan penal code.
