Rwanda to Attend Another Summit on DRC Crisis

President Paul Kagame is set to attend yet another regional summit on the Congo conflict to be convened in Uganda on November 24.

The International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) comes at a time of renewed fighting in Eastern Congo, where M23 rebel movement captured the city of Goma from Congolese government forces.

The ICGLR has convened multiple summits in recent months on the conflict in eastern Congo.

This time the AU Commission chairperson Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma will also attend the extraordinary summit of the 11-member regional bloc.

It’s aimed at finding a lasting solution to a conflict that has left an estimated 450,000 Congolese as refugees in neighbouring countries gather pace.

Uganda denies ongoing media reports that representatives of M23 rebels will attend the Summit.

“No, we have not invited them,” Uganda’s Foreign Affairs Minister Sam Kutesa said when asked whether some M23 leaders were in Kampala.

CNN reported that M23 political leader Jean-Marie Runiga Lugerero was summoned to Kampala by Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni.
