Apps4Africa 2012 Competition Underway

{{On October 25, 2012, the U.S. Department of State and its implementing partner, Appfrica International, launched the Apps4Africa 2012: Business Challenge. }}

This Africa-wide competition seeks to encourage African technologists, software developers, and entrepreneurs to develop innovative mobile, web, and desktop applications (“apps”).

A panel of experts will select winners from among the young entrepreneurs and job creators whose apps best address the challenges of mass youth unemployment on the continent.

Applications are now being accepted on the Apps4Africa website (http://apps4africa.org/2012/enter.php). Final applications are due December 31, 2012.

Over the coming weeks, regional brainstorming workshops will be held in Ghana (December 1), Senegal (December 4), and Nigeria (December 7) to help prospective app developers and other stakeholders identify challenges, devise solutions, and gain skills to create technology start-ups.

Similar workshops have taken place in Uganda, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Competition winners will be announced in late January 2013 and will receive prizes, including cash awards.

Following the competition, Apps4Africa participants will continue to work with Appfrica International to secure additional mentorship, training, and networking support.
