Institutions to Add HIV/AIDS Course in Curriculum

Higher learning institutions of Central African Sub Regional Network against HIV pandemic should integrate HIV/AIDS course in their curriculum.

The request was made 13th November 2012 during the closing ceremony at a two-day workshop of trainers on HIV/AIDS in Southern Province of Rwanda.

The researcher on HIV/AIDS at University of Kinshasa in the faculty of Medicine, Erick Kamangu Ntambwe who was a participant in the training, expressed that in many African countries, higher prevalence of HIV/AIDS infection is observed among youth aged between 18 and 25 years old.

He noted that this infection prevalence is regrettable since that age is the average age of university students.

During the occasion, participants made a recommendation to higher learning institutions for integration of HIV/AIDS course in curriculum as increment to other existing strategies to impede the spread of HIV/AIDS among university students.

Dr. André Musemakweri, the President of The University League for AIDS Control (known by its French acronym, LUCS and president of higher learning institutions of Central African Sub Regional Network against HIV pandemic commended participants for their initiative of encouraging higher learning institutions to integrate HIV/AIDS course in curriculum.

“The wish to integrate HIV/AIDS program in curriculum is an excellent recommendation. Certainly, this can strengthen the fight against HIV/AIDS, argued Dr. André Musemakweri.
