” Saddened to learn of the passing of His Excellency Beji Caïd Essebsi, President of Tunisia and African statesman. Our sincere condolences to his family, and the Government and people of Tunisia,” he said in a tweet.
The President of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat also sent a condolence message to Tunisians.
” I am deeply saddened to learn about the passing of President of Tunisia, Beji Caïd Essebsi, on this 25th July 2019. My condolences with his family, people and the Government of Tunisia” he said.
Essebsi, 92, has passed away after being hospitalized for the third time in recent weeks.
Radio station Mosaique and state broadcaster Wataniya have reported Beji Caid Essebsi was hospitalized Wednesday night for unspecified health trouble.
Essebsi is Tunisia’s first democratically elected president, having won office in 2014 in the wake of the country’s Arab Spring uprising.
He recently announced he wouldn’t run in the election scheduled for November, saying a younger person should lead the country.
He was hospitalized twice in June.
