President Kagame gives message of encouragement to El-Sisi, his successor at AU

President Kagame reiterated this Thursday in Davos, Switzerland, where he is attending the World Economic Forum.

He said: “To my colleague and friend El Sisi, AU chairmanship is a job that has great responsibilities requiring more than just looking into the affairs of our African states but it combines a whole share on key and important issues that are aimed at bringing about change.”

Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, the 64-year-old Egyptian head of state from 2014, will take over AU leadership February 10, 2019, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from President Paul Kagame who has led the Union since January 29, 2018.

During his tenure as the chairman of AU, a number of reforms have been introduced in the Union, ranging from trade, mobility of people among others.

In March 2018 the African Continental Free Trade Area Agreement (AfCFTA) was signed in Kigali by 44 countries as a market integration platform that presents an equal opportunity open market to all participating countries in the region.
