12 juvenile delinquents in Nyagatare Prison sit for national exams

The twelve children include two girls sitting for exams at GS Nyagatare Primary School.

It is for the third time that children in Nyagatare Prison are allowed to sit for exams. Rwanda Correctional Services Spokesperson SSP Hillary Sengabo told IGIHE that since the law allowed prisoners to sit for exams, all the children sitting for the papers have been passing well.

“This is the third time that children have sat for national exams and all those who did them in the past, passed them,” he said.

He added that about 55 children in jail have done the national exams in the past three years. They have all since been released on the President’s clemency.

The children were convicted of crimes involving rape, drug abuse, and robbery.
Six children studying in ordinary level will also sit for the national examinations.
