UTB Volleyball club is considered among national volleyball league title contenders after strengthening its squad by signing new players from adversary teams. These were added to the signing of one of the best volleyball coaches in Rwanda, Fidèle Nyirimana who won the last title as Gisagara VC coach.
After sealing a three years contract as UTB VC coach, Nyirimana also signed four regular players of the national volleyball team including Samuel Niyogisubizo ‘Tyson’ signed from Kirehe VC, Yvan Mahoro who played in Russia, Madison Sibomana who played for Gisagara VC and Aimable Mutuyimana who was REG VC captain.
At the ceremony held at Hill Top Hotel, the President of UTB VC, also Vice Chancellor UTB, Dr. Callixte Kabera told journalists that they signed players with big names because they are building a winning team.
“We finished third in all the competitions we participated in the last season meaning that only two teams (Gisagara VC and REG VC) were better than us. We have set as a target to be higher than that level as we want to win cups. That is why we bought players who used to beat us when they played for adversary teams,” he said.
The four players signed the team’s contracts and were given jobs by the varsity.
UTB VC also launched its women volleyball club that will compete in the national women volleyball league for the first time starting from the coming season. It is a team that constitutes well-known women volleyball players including Judith Hakizimana who was captain of RRA VC and Yvette Igihozo who was APR VC’s captain.
They add to other young players including Belise Dusabe, Louise Muhoza, and Benitha Mukandayisenga.
