The decision was taken during a meeting that brought together the Eastern Province officials and officials from the Rwanda Land Management and Use Authority with leaders from all districts in the province.
The Governor of the Eastern Province, Fred Mufulukye said the decision was taken after it was found that some farmers would grow different crops on grazing land in a disorganized manner.
Mufulukye said, “Some farmers would grow different crops on the land reserved for grazing. They grew beans, potatoes, maizes, among other crops in a way that could not help them get enough produce.”
“We decided to help our citizens so that those who decide to grow crops on the grazing land could get a better harvest for the market not only for subsistence,’’ he added.
According to Mufulukye, “previously livestock farmers were not allowed to grow any crops on grazing land except hybrid grass. But they are now allowed to cultivate 30% of their grazing land.”
Mufulukye further revealed that the farmers will be required to plant crops following the Districts’ regulations on the crops grown in respective districts so as to increase income for farmers through the country’s land consolidation programme.
The meeting also decided that effective from November this year, digitization of land-related services will be digitized.
