Mushikiwabo takes OIF campaign to Romania

Accompanied by Gabon Minister of Trade and Mines, Regis Immongault and others in the delegation, Rwanda’s Foreign Minister Mushikiwabo held talks Saturday with different Romanian officials in the country’s capital city, Bucharest.

The officials include President’s Personal Envoy to OIF, Sergiu Nistor, and Romanian Foreign Minister Teodor Meleșcanu.

Through her campaign Twitter account, Mushikiwabo announced that Minister
Meleșcanu told her of the important topics for Romania in OIF.

“The MFA Teodor Meleşcanu took the opportunity to give the candidate @LMushikiwabo an overview of the topics dear to #Romania: the promotion of gender, digital, the promotion of French language and the sharing of know-how especially through the student exchange,” reads the tweet.

Meleşcanu also “commended the African solidarity which, for him, gives hope that OIF will recover what it has as dearest: capacity of dialogue &collaboration between member states.”

Mushikiwabo has put forward in her campaign four major points including promotion of French language, creating jobs for the youth, promoting OIF credibility and sharing skills.

She is campaigning against the Canadian Michaëlle Jean who is serving her first term as OIF Secretary General since 2015.

OIF General Assembly of Heads of State is expected in Armenia on October 11-12. The assembly will vote the organisation’s General Secretary for the next four years.
Founded in 1970, OIF or La La Francophonie as it is widely known, brings together 58 French speaking countries from across the world.

A survey indicated in 2014 that French was spoken by over 274 million people in the world.
