Why Rwf530 million Burera hotel facility remains in slumber

The facility that was built with the aim of enhancing hospitality and tourism in the area never launched its operations and can now be seen with bushes growing around the compound of the premises.

The Northern Province-based resort was completed in 2016 at a cost of Rwf530 million.

Back in January 2018, Burera Mayor, Florence Uwambajemariya, told IGIHE that the hotel would launch its operations in February.

“We had difficulties finding an investor but we have found one now. I assure Burera residents that in February, the Hotel will have launched its operations,” Uwambajemariya said at the time.

Since then, there were no more newsflash on the issue.

According to officials, the lone investor that had picked interest in running the facility did not reach an agreeable position with district officials.

Locals who live in the vicinity of the Resort told IGIHE that they hoped to get job opportunities from the hotel, hopes that are fast-fading.

Farmers had placed their hopes in the hotel as an emerging market for their food items especially, Irish potatoes, plantains, beans and fruits.

Speaking with IGIHE, Northern Province Governor, Jean Marie Vianney Gatabazi blamed the take-off failure on poor planning.

“This shows poor planning. When you launch such an important project, you have to make sure it will be able to start and operate, because when it doesn’t, then it’s a loss to the government and locals in general,” Gatabazi said.

Gatabazi further said that they have tasked Burera District Officials to operationalize Burera Beach Resort so that it is open to public for Christmas and New Year festivities.
