Kizito Mihigo appeal transferred to the Court of Appeal

In May, the Supreme Court adjourned Kizito’s appeal hearing to June 11th because his co-accused Jean Paul Dukuzumuremyi had no lawyer.

At 9:00am, Kizito and his lawyer, Antoinette Mukamusoni arrived at the court and the court clerks told them that their case has been transferred to the Court of Appeal and the decision was communicated to the Prison officials.

Speaking to IGIHE, the Judiciary Spokesperson, Harrison Mutabazi said that the case has been transferred as stipulated by legal procedures.

“It is true, it has been moved. There are cases in Supreme Court that are being transferred to the Court of Appeal, the same with Kizito’s case,” he said.

He said that they are yet to set the next hearing date, but assured that the court will soon start operations and Kizito’s case will be among those to start with.

On February 27th 2015, the High Court in Kigali found Kizito guilty of the crimes of formation of a criminal gang, conspiracy against the established government or the President of the Republic and conspiracy to murder.

The court sentenced him to ten years in prison which he appealed.

Kizito co-accused, former Journalist Cassien Ntamuhanga who had been handed 25 years in Prison later escaped, and Jean Paul Dukuzumuremyi.
