Rubavu: Police seize 45kgs of cannabis

The operation that was conducted on Monday, 4th June, yielded to the seizure of over 45 kilograms of cannabis concealed in a house.

According to the Police Spokesperson for the Western Region, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Innocent Gasasira, the operation was conducted after information reached law enforcers that some individuals were trafficking drugs within the area.

“We found the cannabis in the house of an individual called Francine Ntabanganyimana who promptly fled the scene” said CIP Gasasira.

He further noted that Drug traffickers threaten the safety and stability in communities since they engage in other crimes such as theft and violence.

Residents welcomed the police crackdown and called for complete elimination of some drinking dens which harbor abusers.

CIP Gasasira in turn thanked local leaders and the community who welcomed the call to join the fight against illegal imports that continuously destroy the lives of both young and old.

He called for stronger partnerships with law enforcement organs to prevent any potential crimes and apprehend offenders.

Article 594 of the Rwandan penal code, stipulates that, any person who, unlawfully, makes, transforms, imports, or sells narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances within the country, shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of three to five years and a fine of Rwf500,000 to Rwf5 million.
