Regional Police Commanders engage local leaders on crime prevention

{In a bid to ensure maximum public safety, Regional Police Commanders are meeting with different categories of people to enlighten them about their role in community policing.}

Recent of those meetings were held on December 28, when the RPC-central, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Rogers Rutikanga and RPC-South, ACP Gilbert Gumira met with local leaders pursuing civic education (Ingando), in their respective regions.

In the two separate meeting, both RPCs focused on putting more efforts in empowering community crime prevention mechanisms.

All local leaders at the village and cell level are undertaking civic education in different parts of the country since December 26.

In his address to over 250 local leaders who are gathered at ETEL Masaka in Kicukiro District, ACP Rutikanga said that to achieve maximum public safety there has to be effective information sharing in addressing issues concerning security.

“Some of these issues are addressed through normal Police work but Irondo – community night patrols – can make a bigger difference if they are supported. They have been able to intercept criminals and recover stolen items,” said ACP Rutikanga

“We have good working relations with local leaders at various levels but we have to take further to make security an individual responsibility either as leaders or residents.”

He reminded them to make use of the citizens’ record book to register new entrants in their constituencies.

In detailing how community policing has been of great contribution to public safety, ACP Rutikanga said: “Communities work hand-in-hand with police to proactively address the immediate conditions that give rise to public safety concerns such as crime, social disorder, and fear of crime.”

He pointed out that in Rwanda; communities have been involved in this trend.

“People have understood that they have a duty to deliver towards ensuring sustainable security.”

While addressing local leaders from Kitabi, Tare and Uwinkingi sectors who converged at TTC Mbuga, ACP Gumira also shared a similar message to local leaders and encouraged them to put much effort in community night patrols.
