{Following the Sunday Nyarugenge prison inferno, a total of 171 inmates were affected with many losing their basic items including documents. Some of the victims received basic materials from the Ministry of Disaster and Refugees affairs yesterday. }
Some inmates have expressed explicit fear as some of their court case files were among the destroyed documents.
The management of Rwanda Correctional Service assured them that their files can be obtained once they are needed.
“There is no problem regarding files since we kept them on computers in folders shared with courts. Whoever needs a document can receive it and we do make a copy for an inmate requesting it,” said the Commissioner General of Rwanda Correctional Service , CGP George Rwigamba.
He explained that an inmate in need of documents will inform the prison management for retrieving.
Nyarugenge prison accommodates over 3000 inmates. It is expected that they will be relocated to the new prison of Mageragere by February 2017.
