Five arrested with hard drugs in Nyarugenge

{Police in Nyarugenge district arrested five people including three women after their were found in possession of 15 sachets of heroin.}

Police identified the suspects as Chantal Nikuze, 26, Eric Kamondo alias Panshi, 42, Afisa Mukarugwiza, 27, Zahal Mukabuduwe, 28, and Jean Pierre Nshimiyimana, 36.

They were apprehended in separate operations conducted on November 2 in Nyarugenge Sector.

Supt. Emmanuel Hitayezu, the police spokesman for the City of Kigali, said that the suspects were at the time, either selling or abusing the hard drug.

“Police had information on some of these individuals following information from members of the public, and in the due course, they also arrested their accomplices,” Supt. Hitayezu said.

He said Investigations are still ongoing to establish if there are other people associated the criminal act.

“Community policing is playing a great role in crime detection, fighting and prevention and we commend the partnership, ” he said.

Elsewhere, police in Rwamagana District also intercepted and impounded a vehicle, Toyota corolla registration number RAA 904X trafficking over 160kgs of cannabis.

Police is still searching the driver, who abandoned the vehicle in Muhazi sector after noticing a police checkpoint connection carrying six bags of cannabis drugs weighing 163 kilograms

Under article 594 of the Rwandan Penal Code, “any person who, unlawfully, makes, transforms, imports, or sells narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances within the country, is liable to a term of imprisonment of three to five years and a fine of Rwf500, 000 to Rwf5 million.

If criminal acts under the above paragraph are committed internationally, penalties are doubled.

    All Rwandan should play their role of sharing information about drugs abuse to the security organs as community policing do in away of crime detection, fighting and prevention.
