{The intensified awareness and operation against narcotic drugs in Gakenke District in the last four months led to the seizure of assortment of illicit drugs that include 226 litres of Kanyanga, 142 dozens of Sky Waragi and 1272 sachets of Reving Warage, all banned gin in Rwanda.}
Other seized gin include 28 dozens of Real Warage and 156 sachets of Kitoko, and 1325 rolls of cannabis.
The drugs were destroyed on July 7 in a public exercise held in Gasenyi Sector and witnessed by hundreds of residents, students and local leaders.
Speaking shortly after the destruction of the drugs, the District Police Commander (DPC) of Gakenke, Supt. Gaston Karagire warned of severe consequences to those still indulging in either trafficking, making, selling or abusing such psychotropic substances.
He commended the role played by Gakenke residents in the interception of the destroyed drugs and arrest of dealers.
“Involving in illicit drugs in any way is a crime that we will continue to prioritize to fight and I need to emphasize the role of members of the public in this campaign, which has been vital in identifying and arresting drug dealers and abusers,” Supt. Karagire said.
The vice mayor of Gakenke in charge of social affairs, Catherine Uwamariya reminded the residents that by indulging in drug dealings, they are hindering the development of their household and venturing either family or personal incomes into criminal business.
She urged them to partner with police and report drug dealer and those who distill illicit gin.
She further appealed to them to actively participate in government development programmes like Umuganda.
