AU Police peacekeeping students pay tribute to Genocide victims

Trainers and Police officers from seven African countries and Denmark currently attending an African Union Pre-deployment course at Police Training School (PTS) Gishari in Rwamagana District, visited Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre on June 11 to pay tribute to Rwandans, who were killed in the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

Fifty-four police officers from Comoros, Denmark, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Sudan and Rwanda are attending the ten-day course.

At the centre, they laid a wreath on the mass graves in respect of over 25, 000 victims of Genocide laid to rest there.

They were also explained on the history of Rwanda, how the genocide was planned and implemented and the role played by security organs in the planning and execution of the genocide.

Captain Bouchrane Soiyfidine from Comoros, said that what happened in Rwanda was “inhuman that shouldn’t happen again either in Rwanda or anywhere else.”

He said that it is imperative to understand different cultures, history and challenges in different countries and effective approaches so as not to be bystanders like was the case in Rwanda.

“When you sow hatred, disunity, bad leadership, you expect nothing less, I hope what happened in Rwanda should be a lesson to the generations to fight negative ideologies,” Soiyfidine said.

The course was designed to equip the officers with concepts, skills and core values of peacekeeping.
