{Two officials from the United Nations Peace Keeping operations are in the country to assess the operational readiness of Rwanda National Police (RNP) contingents that were generated and trained for deployment in peacekeeping missions.}
The week-long assessment exercise started on Monday at the Police Training School (PTS) Gishari in Rwamagana District.
PTS accommodates the Peacekeeping Training Centre, among other training branches of the school.
Eko Budman from the UN mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) and Silviu Octavian from the UN stabilization mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) are inspecting the operation capabilities and capacities of two Formed Police Unit (FPU) contingents set to be deployed in the two missions in the coming months on rotational basis.
A 240 robust contingent will replace the same number in South Sudan while other 160 will be deployed in Haiti to replace Rwanda FPU VI.
Chief Supt. Toussaint Muzezayo, the director of Formed Police Unit management under the department of Peace Support Operations in Rwanda National Police, said, this is part of the UN standards and prerequisite before deployment.
“They are assessing the operation readiness of these two contingents, their ability to perform their future peacekeeping assignments in mission areas,” Chief Supt. Muzezayo said.
“They test their language proficiency either in English or French depending on the preference of the officers and the mission where they will be deployed; their shooting skills, their capacity and ability in crowd control, police techniques and driving skills for the selected drivers, among other peacekeeping roles,” he added.
Rwanda maintains five FPU contingents of 820 police officers in three missions, in addition to the two, three are in Central African Republic (CAR).
