Twenty six Maritime Officers from Member States of the Eastern Africa Standby Force (EASF) are undertaking a regional course on maritime search and rescue operations. The two week training was officially opened on 6 June 2016 at Hill Top Hotel in Kigali by Brigadier General Ferdinand Safari, the RDF J5, on behalf of the Rwanda Defence Force Chief of Defence Staff, Gen Patrick Nyamvumba.
In his remarks, Brig Gen Safari underlined the importance of the course as it will equip participants with required techniques and skills for an effective emergency response on inland waters, especially on Lakes, as well as on Sea.
During the training opening ceremony the EASF Director, Ambassador Issimail Chanfi was represented by Lt Col S.K Saeed. The latter explained to the press that throughout the course, “ participants involved in Search and Rescue operations will be equipped with knowledge and skills required to carry out their respective roles effectively and efficiently in an integrated emergency response system”.
The EASF maritime search and rescue training, the first of its kind to be held in Rwanda, will be closed on 17 June 2016. Seven (out of ten) EASF Member States, namely the Republics of Comoros, Djibouti, Kenya, Rwanda, Seychelles, Sudan and Uganda are represented in the training.
