Nyanza: Casual workers form anti-crime club, join youth volunteers’ organization

{Over seventy casual workers in Nyanza town have formed an Anti-Crime Club and joined as members of Rwanda Youth Volunteers in Community Policing (RYVCP) in a bid to contribute to the safety and security of their town.}

They made the decision during their recent meeting with the District Community Liaison Officers, Inspector of Police (IP) Jean Baptiste Bizimana who urged them to be part of Rwanda National Police’s crime prevention initiatives.

One of the members, Ramathan Ntakirutimana, thanked Rwanda National Police for reaching out to them and said that they are committed to ensuring public safety and be part of community policing.

His fellow members also echoed the same message adding that through this group, they will be able to put their ideas together to be active agents of community policing and fighting criminality.

“We have been hearing about anti-crime clubs and what they do, and we have borrowed that example to also join the campaign as a team. Together, we can achieve a collective goal of community safety. Through this club we are committed to discuss and find how best to improve road usage by making all members accountable to traffic rules and regulations and fight drug abuse,” Ntakirutimana said.

In his message to the casual workers, IP Bizimana detailed the security situation in the area saying that what has been achieved in terms of security has to be preserved, improved and sustained.

“To do that, we need everybody on board and we are happy to have you as a team to jointly ensure safety of our country. Every Rwandan plays a major role in national development, you have the ability to stop crimes from happening,” said IP Bizimana.

It is the first time casual workers have formed an anti-crime club,a good example for youth groups to emulate.

With over 1000 clubs currently, more than 90 percent of them are formed in schools.

Through community policing, Rwanda National Police has managed to bring on board several partners in crime prevention, including road users, learning institutions, traders, private enterprises, among others, which has contributed to the rate of crime detection, prevention and mitigating impact of crime.
