ES Ruyenzi students tutored on dangers of GBV

Rwanda National Police (RNP) has called on over 800 students of ES Ruyenzi in Kamonyi District to take part in ending gender based violence and child abuse.

The call was made by the vice mayor in charge of social affairs in Kamonyi, district, Goreth Murekatete in a recent anti-crime campaign at the school.

“Ending GBV and child abuse is a responsibility for all. We all have to join efforts and means to report and prevent such violence from happening.”

“The government has ensured that everyone – man, woman and child – is given equal opportunity to contribute to Rwanda’s development. Let us therefore take this opportunity and embrace equality for all.”

The District Community Liaison Officer, Inspector of Police (IP) Athanase Niyonagira, said: “Everyone, who is below the age of 18, is considered a child and have basic rights that have to be respects. The same applies to all people of all walks of life…any form abuse on a person and violation of their rights is criminal and punishable by law,” said IP Niyonagira.

On Gender Based Violence, IP Niyonagira, said that it can be physical, psychological or mental and that’s why dealing with it requires concerted effort.

“GBV encompasses extensive human rights violations including brutality, battering and harassment. Any of these abuses can leave profound mental scars, damage the wellbeing of the victim. Particularly, violence against women and children is considered the most insidious human rights violation,” said the DCLO.

He further added that GBV has devastating consequences not only for victims but also for society.

“GBV has significant impact at the individual level, with victims suffering from physical and mental effects, loss of earnings and healthcare costs.”

“It also has a wider societal negative impact including lower productivity and thus reduced economic output and growth, and increased pressure on social and health services. You can succeed in fighting it by working closely with the police and providing timely information on anyone who mistreat their partner in any way.”
