The first round of the national handball championship came to a close with the reigning champions, Police continuing to dominate the local arena.
On Saturday, Police played their last match of the first round against ES Kigoma, winning by 30-15, sending a strong signal of retaining the trophy for the fourth time in a row.
The law enforcers lead the table with 27 maximum points scoring over 200 goals in nine games, two ahead of closest and usual challenger, APR, who have 25 points.
Police captain, Gilbert Mutuyimana, who has been instrumental in the campaign, netted the match nine-high individual score in Saturday’s match.
Police coach, Assistant Inspector of Police (AIP) Antoine Ntabanganyimana, said: “Our focus is to secure maximum points in each of the 18 games because we believe that this is the only way to defend the trophy, and so far so good.”
“In the short break, we will shift the focus to the Genocide Commemoration Tournament,” he added.
The tourney will be played between June 4 and 5 in Kigali.
