As a move to support vulnerable genocide survivors, SONARWA yesterday donated 88 mattresses worth almost Rwf2, 870,000 to genocide widows and orphans in various sectors of Gasabo district.
Handing over the donations were preceded by the genocide memorial in Gishaka village, Nyagasozi cell of Bumbogo sector in Gasabo district where 5,896 victims are buried.
The director of SONARWA, Aina Ademola said that he feels glad for Rwanda’s progress after the 1994 genocide against Tutsi adding that the donation of mattresses is meant to walk with Rwanda on the journey of growth by supporting local communities and enhancing welfare of genocide survivors.
Nzirimu James, who is in charge of health care of genocide survivors in the National Commission for the Fight Against Genocide(CNLG) said that mattresses are delivered at the time they are needed and that more advocacies will be held to improve their livelihoods.
Each of the 44 supported survivors’ families received 2 mattresses.
Beneficiaries have lauded the spirit of supporting the improvement of their welfare.
“It was sad to see an old man like me sleeping on piled card boxes. Now I will sleep comfortably,” said a 60-year old man, Gasana.
Another 50 year old woman, Mukagahutu Violette suffering from backache said that bad sleeping would aggravate pain but now will be comfortable.
During the 100 days of commemorating 1994 genocide against Tutsi, SONARWA engages in various activities of visiting memorials, supporting vulnerable genocide survivors as a way of building the nation.
