Nyamasheke district administration has unveiled a plan to facilitate 9,000 families rear domestic animals following a recent survey by the National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda (NISR) indicating that these families need to engage in livestock farming.
The expected donations will be in addition to the already existing Girinka program aimed at providing cows to poor families.
The president of Rusizi district advisory committee, Dr Télesphore Ndabamenye revealed this during its sitting held on Saturday where he said that required money to buy the animals is available.
“It was established by NISR that 9,000 citizens need to keep the animals. We have Rwf 300,000,000 for facilitating citizens to get domestic animals, in line with Girinka program,” he said.
John Gashabukahe, one of targeted beneficiaries has welcomed the gesture.
“Providing domestic animals would improve our living standards as we will get milk and farmyard manure enabling us to boost farm yield. The Rwf 300,000,000 for buying the domestic animals is planned for the financial year 2016/2017.
