{The ongoing crackdown on drug traffickers arrested three men on April 14 as Rwanda National Police continues the campaign to break the supply chain.}
The suspects are identified as Damascene Manirarora arrested in Kirehe District, Justin Bahati arrested in Nyamagabe District, while the third suspect, Moise Nshimiyimana was apprehended in Muhanga District.
Manirarora was arrested in Cyunuzi by members of the District Administration Security Support Organ (DASSO), with 10 kilogrammes of cannabis while Nshimiyimana was found in possession of 2000 pellets of narcotic drugs, at the time of his arrest.
The Southern region police spokesperson, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) André Hakizimana said that after acquiring information that Nshimiyimana was abusing and selling cannabis, investigations were launched in which he was caught red-handed with 2000 rolls.
CIP Hakizimana went on to warn that “police is on alert and will stop at nothing” to combat drug related crimes in the country and ensure that dealers and abusers are brought to book.
In the Eastern region, Inspector of Police (IP) Emmanuel Kayigi, said: “Community policing is playing a big role in the campaign against crimes and drug abuse in particular. We can only urge the public to strengthen this spirit of cooperation by identifying and giving us information in time for quick response.”
According to the laws, making, selling and use of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances attracts a prison sentence of up to five years and a fine of up to Rwf5 million under article 594 of the penal code.
Facilitating another person to use drugs attracts a penalty of up to three years in prison and a fine of Rwf500, 000 to Rwf5 million under article 595 while under article 596, inducing a child to use narcotic drugs is punishable with an imprisonment of between five and seven years.
