Burera raises Rw34, 000,000 for survivors

{Burera district collected Rwf 34,000,000 during the commemoration week to support vulnerable genocide survivors and residents have been advised to keep on supporting genocide survivors beyond the commemoration week but continue extending these acts of varlour even beyond. }

Parliamentarian Semasaka Gabriel made the request on Wednesday during the closure of commemoration week in Burera district which took place in Rusarabuye sector of Burera district at the memorial center where 95 victims of 1994 genocide against the Tutsi are buried.

Semasaka reminded Burera citizens that commemorating genocide victims is a way toward giving tribute to them and helping survivors in the resilience process.

“Supporting genocide survivors should not end with commemoration period. However it must be a culture since it will reduce the number of vulnerabilities and enhance realization of common progress,” he noted.

He highlighted that elders have a responsibility to tell Rwanda’s true history to the young generation.

The mayor of Burera district, Uwambajemariya Florence promised to keep taking care of survivors rebuilding their houses among other challenges they face.

She also noted that they will draw attention on the project of the boat or genocide survivors operating on Burera lake and capacitating those with academic qualifications to get employment.

Niyonsenga Fabien, the president of Ibuka in Burera district has lauded achievements gained and requested survivors to be the agents of unity and reconciliation striving for livelihood improvement and self reliance.

Burera district has two memorials of genocide against the Tutsi; Rugarama memorial with 16 victims buried there and Rusarabure with 95 victims.
