Former Musanze mayor survives attack, one of the six thugs killed

{Unidentified thugs have raided the home of former Musanze district mayor, Mpembyemungu Winifrida among which one of them has been killed and one injured.}

It is for the second time for thugs attempting to harm the former mayor. At the beginning of 2014, thugs threw a grenade at her home located in Giramahoro village, Ntenge cell of Muhoza sector in Musanze district which killed her adopted child, injured a domestic servant and her daughter.

This time round, six people armed with machetes, spears among others attempted to attack her house but were repulsed into disarray by security personnel.

The spokesperson of Rwanda National Police, ACP Celestin Twahirwa confirmed the information that security personnel neutralized the attack of which the cause remains unknown.

“Last night at around 1:00 am, thugs raided the residence of former mayor of Musanze, Mpembyemungu Winifrida. They were heard by people at home after breaking the fence. Soldiers who were on patrol repulsed them as they tried to break the window of the house owner. In the process, one of the attackers was shot dead and another was injured,” he said.

Twahirwa said the motive of the attackers remains unknown. “It is unknown whether they wanted to kill the former mayor or robbery.”

The injured thug has been taken to Musanze hospital where he is getting treatment under tight security.

ACP Twahirwa says that the attack cannot be linked to previous raid carried at Mpembyemungu’s home which killed her adopted child.

“Linking the two raids is wrong since the investigation has not yet been completed to establish motives of each attack. However, breaking into the premise and forcefully repulsed, demonstrates that they had bad intentions,” he said.
