The president of Supreme Court, Prof Sam Rugege said it is time to start punishing government legal advisors who fall short on their responsibilities for selfish gains.
Prof Rugege unveiled this during the launch of the 5th retreat of Rwanda’s Judicial Sectors Forum held in Rubavu district on Thursday.
The government has been advising legal advisors to respect the practice and application of law, avoiding malpractices that would bring the government in courts.
“Some people win court cases but don’t receive compensation or it is delayed. Other court cases are ended unfairly to the extent that the finalization of one case brings more court cases. It is time to severely punish those who illegally end cases targeting own interests,” he said.
Prof Rugege said that everything was made possible for judicial sectors to improve service delivery but malpractices tarnishing the reputation of the country and oppressing citizens linger.
“Is it the lack of strength? Is it improper understanding? What causes the situation to persist? “He wondered.
“We must embrace new ways of seeking and having access to the wealth of people who misappropriated government’s wealth,” he noted.
The Minister of Justice, Johnson Busingye said that the retreat was meant to seek ways of boosting good performance and respect delivery of justice.
Participants in the retreat are studying how to improve service delivery in judicial sector through the adoption of technology, seeking advanced mechanisms towards tackling human trafficking and terrorism, devising means of how to implement new measures of recovering misappropriated government’s wealth and fast delivery of justice.
