{Young girls studying at various schools in Bugarama sector of Rusizi district in Western Province attribute premature pregnancies to poverty where parents fail to satisfy their needs.}
Students revealed this last Saturday to parliamentarians that were touring various schools, talking to students about reproductive health.
They said that parents’ failure to meet their needs prompts them to seek support from men which involves consenting to sex demands.
“Sometime premature pregnancies result from failing to get needs from parents, hence seeking men’s support who as well demand for sex and eventual premature pregnancies,” said Iradukunda Safiati, one of the students.
“Premature pregnancies happen most of the time among senior six girls. They have needs that they need to meet. We should develop a culture of getting satisfied with what we have,” advised another student, Zahara Manishimwe.
MP Muhongayire Christine requested girls to recognize that they are responsible for their life.
“Everyone is responsible for planning for her life destiny. You will get infected with HIV/AIDS if you are not cautious with the way you handle your life. You will become useless to the family and yourself since you will have blocked the road towards own progress,” she said.
Rusizi district is among those registering high numbers of premature pregnancies.
