Karongi: Motorcyclists commended for their community policing role

Karongi District Police Commander, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Bernard Gahima has urged commercial motorcyclists operating in the district to maintain the spirit and momentum in crime prevention.

CIP Gahima made the remarks on March 22 during a community policing meeting with 115 commercial motorcyclists operating in district.

“Following several community policing meetings we’ve held with you, it’s now clear that you understand the need for everyone to be part of crime prevention; we can only urge you to keep up the momentum and even perform better,” the DPC told motorcyclists.

The 115 motocyclists are from Cooperative de Taxi Motos-Karongi (COTAMOKA) and Cooperative de Transport par Moyen de Motos-Karongi (COTRAMOKA).

CIP Gahima pointed out that; “Always remember that among your passengers there might be wrongdoers that’s why you should always be vigilant not to transport illegal luggage or people in criminal activities.”

“Anytime you encounter such a person, notify the police immediately or any other security agency. The more you fight these criminals the more you are going to enjoy running a safe business.”

Besides encouraging motorcyclists to report offenders, CIP Gahima urged them to always abide by traffic rules as means of avoiding reckless riding.

“Avoid violating signposts and overloading or carrying more than one passenger; always wear helmet…remember an accident is not selective, anyone can be a victim , it could be you, your relative or anyone that’s why you should respect road safety standards.”

The head of two cooperatives, Louis Bavakure, who spoke on behalf of the motorcyclists said that they have recommitted to ensuring public safety and also abide by law.

“Without safety and security we wouldn’t be able to operate that is why we have to play a major role so as to make profits. We can only do that by partnering with the police at all times.”
