President Paul Kagame has held talks with the former president of Tanzania Benjamin Mkapa, the current coordinator of the Burundi peace talks as appointed by the East African Community (EAC).
The President of Tanzania, John Pombe Magufuli, the current EAC chairman on March 2016 announced Mkapa as a coordinator in Burundi peace talks during a press briefing at the headquarters of EAC in Arusha. He assists president Museveni who leads peace negotiations in Burundi.
Mkapa’s visit to Rwanda follows exclusive talks with president Museveni held in Kyankwanzi on March 16th, 2016 where they deliberated on the state of security in Burundi.
Benjamin Mkapa led Tanzania between 1995 and 2005.He met president Kagame yesterday evening.
Mkapa, 77, is expected to contribute to the resolution of Burundi crisis which started in April last year when president Pierre Nkurunziza demonstrated willingness to run for another term which opposition considered illegal and started demonstrations which resulting into mass violence in the country.
The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) says that more than 250,000 people have fled Burundi to neighboring countries while over 400 people have been killed. Rwanda accommodates almost 75 000 Burundi refugees.
