{The Rwanda National Police anti-crime awareness campaigns among the youth in schools have continued with the force reaching to thousands of students in Nyagatare, Gatsibo and Ngororero districts on Wednesday.}

The campaign is aimed at ensuring that young people desist from any sort of unlawful act, play a significant role in reporting and preventing crimes as well as building a safe, knowledgeable and skilled generation free from crimes.

In Ngororero, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Marc Gasangwa, the District Police Commander of Ngororero engaged about 430 students of Groupe Scolaire Mahembe in community policing discussions and urged them to report anyone that tries to lure them into selling or consuming narcotic drugs.

He further introduced them to the services offered by Isange One Stop Centre, which was established to offer free medical, legal and psyschosocio services to victims of gender based violence and child abuse.

In Nyagatare, police officers met with 427 students of Bright Academy and the school administration in a campaign held at the school where they were urged to be ambassadors in fighting the common crimes of Gender Based Violence and abuse of drugs especially among the youth.

“We believe youth can play a major part in fighting these offenses that’s why we encourage you to be ambassadors in crime prevention either at school or in your communities,” Inspector of Police (IP) Jean Claude Kaburabuza, the District Community Liaison Officer, told the students.

IP Kaburabuza was accompanied by the in-charge of traffic and road safety in Nyagatare, Inspector of Police (IP) Jean Claude Ndamage, who also urged students to desist from playing in the middle of the road and look both sides of the road before crossing the road.

During the campaign, students also formed an anti-crime club and elected their colleague, Innocent Zawadi as the club coordinator.

Elsewhere, Inspector of Police (IP) Roger Rwakayiro, the District Community Liaison Officer (DCLO) engaged about 480 students of Ecole Secondaire de Gasange in Gatsibo in community policing lectures and sensitised them against drug abuse.

“Abusing drugs is a serious crime punishable by the law, but also can cut your future short thus resorting to other criminal activities like theft and other unlawful acts,” IP Rwakayiro told the students.

In a campaign that was also attended by local leaders in Gatsibo, IP Rwakayiro reminded girl students that abusing drugs can lead them to other undesirable tendencies like unwanted pregnancies and early parenthood.
