{The recently elected mayor of Kicukiro District, , Dr Jeanne Nyirahabimana has called on resident Niboye Sector to work closely with security organs saying the security is the pillar to development and their welfare.}
The mayor made the remarks during a meeting she chaired and attended by the District Police Commander (DPC) Superintendent of Police (SP) Sano Nkeramugaba on February 27 and attended by close to 700 residents.
“The best way you can contribute to building a safer community is through working closely with Rwanda National Police and other security organs, and provide Every information of anything suspicious ,” said the Mayor.
While addressing residents, SP Nkeramugaba outlined major crimes including drug abuse, Gender Based Violence and Human Trafficking and advised them to always report to police whenever they detect such crimes and others.
“Normally traffickers target the vulnerable ones and they lure them into believe that they have a lot to offer them, this is why we all have to be on the watch against such people. Sometimes they are offering job opportunities or academic opportunities abroad, but in reality victims are put into different sorts of slavery,” said the DPC.
He reminded that human trafficking is an organized crime that those who are involved apply a number of tricks to lure their victims and attempt to beat security apparatus but they never succeed especially where there is cooperation between security organs and the general public.
With regards to drug abuse, SP Nkeramugaba pointed out that, “The effect of consuming such substances are not only limited to the consumers but his or her family and the nation at large. Cases of gender based violence are commonly brought about by drug abuse.”
“This is why you should join efforts with all security organs to collectively combat the vice. Narcotics are a threat to life and they interfere with security and safety measures within any given community. It is therefore imperative that we all join hands to protect our people from this scourge, especially the youth, the most targeted and most affected,” he said.
The DPC went on to add that police have instituted tough counter measures and these initiatives have led to the seizure of a large amount of narcotic substances and arrest of suspects involved.
“There is also big participation of citizens that contributes greatly to this success.The war against drug abuse requires strong partnership with Police – therefore – all responsible residents need to come together and devise initiatives to overcome this scourge. When we continue to work together, dealers will understand that there is no room for their illegal operations in our community,” he said.
