Rusizi residents cry foul: Four years down, no compensation in sight

Residents from Nzaha and Bugarama sectors in Rusizi district say that four years have now gone by without getting compensation for their land through which the road to Rusizi III dam passes.

Residents say that Rwanda Transport Development Agency (RTDA) registered the area of citizens’ land used while constructing the road in 2011 promising to pay as soon as possible but have not received anything since.

“The problem I have is that my land was registered. I was promised to get compensation of my land but I was disappointed to find my account empty,” said Innocent Bikorimana.

Another resident Anna Kankindi said: “I would construct a small house in 14 meters they have taken. They have not paid the Rwf 100,500 they owe me.”

Residents say that they were affected since they had already planted banana, avocadoes, and mangoes in their field when the construction started and lost all they had put in place.

RTDA officer in charge of coordinating compensation , Pasteur Kayisire, revealed that the district hadn’t released the report.

“We have never received the report of the district so that we can pay the affected residents,” he said.

The Rusizi district administration however, says they have, on behalf of the affected residents, sent a claim letter to Rwanda Transport Agency who have not reacted to it whatsoever.

The project of road construction used 14 square meters of the residents’ land, valued at Rwf 2,500,000.
