The government of Rwanda has revealed a plan to start collaborating with partners in international community to set a well organized process of relocating Burundi refugees into other countries.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Louise Mushikiwabo said that Rwanda accomplishes duties of protecting and taking care of refugees. She however recalled that accommodating refugees from a neighboring country for long affects both countries as apparent in the Great Lakes Region.
“This relates to well known security situation in Burundi. The increasing number of refugees creates problems. This affects refugees and hampers attainment of sustainable political solution. Regarding Rwanda, security problems caused by Burundians are increasing and affecting diplomatic relations,” she said.
In recent months, Rwanda has requested partners to accommodate Burundi refugees in camps and others living in towns of Rwanda. No party has confirmed the request even though the situation of political crisis in Burundi is not ebbing.
Rwanda accommodates more than 75,000 Burundi refugees who started entering the country in May 2015 when president Nkurunziza confirmed to be among candidates seeking to run for another term.
