Call against illegal mining in Rulindo

Residents of Rulindo District have been urged to refrain from acts of illegal mining which at times result into disasters.

The call follows an incident on January 2 in Shengamure Cell of Masoro Sector, where a man only identified as Nidendereza, who was mining illegal in the night in a cassiterite site, was seriously injured when a cliff of a mining site curved-in.

Nidendereza, who is currently admitted at Rutongo hospital, was saved by security organs and area residents.

Inspector of Police (IP), Innocent Gasasira, Police spokesperson for the Northern region, appealed to the residents to desist from such unlawful and dangerous acts.

“These illegal mining activities are mostly done at night or in abandoned and closed sites, and it is always likely that such individuals will face calamities and there are cases where even some people have been killed in these sites,” said IP Gasasira.

He called upon residents to fight such illegal and dangerous activities, which also have impact on the environment, by calling police or local authorities whenever they witness such acts.

He further urged them to join the campaign against anything that can cause insecurity like drug abuse and gender based violence.
