Why Rwanda was selected for first drones’ airport

It is expected that in 2016, construction of an airport for drones will start in Rwanda as announced last year by experts from Construction Afrotech Company.

The drones will serve to carry medical supplies distant destinations in the countryside that are difficult to reach by road.

Talking to Swiss Info, the Afrotech director, Jonathan Ledgard, said that they have chosen Rwanda as the first country in which the drones’ airport will be built because the country accepted to provide land and willing to accommodate the drones.

He said that his company has a strong cooperation with University of Rwanda which will provide expertise in construction up to the completion of the project.

Ledgard added that Rwanda is an IT-secure country which brings confidence that there will be no hackers to interfere with the drones’ performance.

Lukas Zucker, a teacher of history in Zurich University, said the drones’ project in Rwanda will demonstrate its importance within a short time.

He commended President Paul Kagame for his commitment towards the promotion of information technologies.

Rwanda will be the first country to implement laws guiding drones airport since they have been implemented nowhere else across the world.

The drone project in Africa is sponsored by a Switzerland University and some financial institutions in Switzerland. It has other partners from England and Africa among others. The project will partner with world’s big companies supplying medicines in African rural areas.

After Rwanda, Afrotech plans to continue construction of drones airport in Ethiopia in 2020.
