Police foil highway robbery in Rulindo

{Police in Rulindo District have arrested two men who allegedly plotted to rob a Kigali-bound truck carrying alcoholic drinks along Musanze-Kigali highway. }

Police identified the suspects as Eric Ndayisaba and Pierre Rutaganda currently detained at Shyorongi police station.

On January 12, around midnight in Rusiga Sector, the duo is said to have mounted a moving truck belonging to Bralirwa as it transported hundreds beer crates.

The suspect managed to cut open the truck holder tent which made at least 130 crates to fall from the truck.

According to Supt Sano Nkeramugaba, the Rulindo District Police Commander‎ said they received a call from people reporting about the highway theft and they responded immediately.

Police managed to recover 87 crates although 46 others were still missing by press time.
‎The crates were ‎recovered from the suspects.
“We thank the public that tipped us as the robbery was under way since some of the stolen crates were hidden in about 800 metres away from the scene of robbery,” said the Supt. Nkeramugaba.

He added that when people take part in maintaining their security, fighting criminality becomes easy.

“We are currently searching for four other suspects connected to this robbery and there is no doubt, with the public cooperation, we will apprehend them and recover other missing crates,” said SP Nkeramugaba.

The suspects risk a jail sentence of up to two years if found guilty as stipulated by article 300 of the penal code.

The article states that, “Any person who commits theft without violence or threat shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of six months to two years and a fine of two to five times the value of the stolen property or one of these penalties.”
