Nyanza: Village leader disappears with Rwf 2.2 million belonging to a cooperative

{Murengezi Eric,leader of Misasa village, Cyotamakara cell, Ntyazo sector in Nyanza district is on the run, having been reported for stealing over Rwf 2 million belonging to 120 cooperative members. }

According to the acting executive secretary of Ntyazo sector, Murengezi Eric has been missing since 23rd December 2015. He has, for a long time, been managing citizens’ fund contributed to the cooperative locally known as Ikimina.

The cooperative comprises of 120 members who have had to hand their contribution to Murengezi Eric as the treasurer. He was supposed to have deposited the contributions to his personal account since members had no collective account.

Ngirimana David, the acting executive secretary of Ntyazo sector, told IGIHE that; “It is known that Misasa village leader escaped on Tuesday. He missed in various meetings he was supposed to attend at the cell. Since then, citizens informed us that he owned more than Rwf 2 million of their cooperative (ikimina).”

Members of the cooperative were supposed to share their stakes on 24th December, but Murengezi disappeared a day before.

“A scrutiny of his personal account with the local SACCO indicated that the money of the cooperative for which he was treasurer has never been deposited to his account. Besides, his wife and his children had left earlier on Sunday while his domestic appliances were also not found in his house, implying they had disappeared with members’ money,” he said.

Ngirimana says that Murengezi will be pursued in collaboration with Rwanda National Police so that he answers the charges of impropriety.
