{The amended constitution of the Republic of Rwanda has come into force, following President Paul Kagame’s appending of signature on 24th December 2015 and publication of new amendments in the official gazette. }
“The Constitution of the Republic of Rwanda, 2015 revised edition, is in force,” Minister of Justice Busingye Johnson said in a brief statement on Christmas Day.
The “yes” vote in favour of the constitutional change registered 98.4 percent, leaving just 1.6 percent of voters opposed.
The constitution has been reformed through a process that involved petition to parliament from over 3.7 million Rwandans, making the amendments and subjecting the changes to a referendum vote.
Following the referendum elections, the president of the republic, Paul Kagame lauded all Rwandans for demonstrating their willingness on how they want to be led. He revealed this during the beginning of the 13th national dialogue which started on 21st December, 2015.
