{Police in Gicumbi District was joined by local leaders and road users in the area to echo the call to respect traffic rules and regulations to prevent likely accidents that arise out of breaching road safety standards.}
During an exercise that brought together drivers, motorcyclists and cyclists held on December 22 in Rukomo Sector, the District Police Commander, Supt. Steven Gaga told them that abiding by traffic rules is both in their interest and other users.
“When an accident occurs, a driver or a motorcyclist becomes the first victim, this means you should be the first to observe road safety rules to save your lives and those of your passengers,” Supt. Gaga said.
He outlined over speeding, carelessness, drunkenness and using a phone while driving as some of the major causes of road safety accidents and loss of lives and destruction of property.
“Remember you are transporting people, using public roads where there are other vehicles, motorcycles, cyclists and pedestrians that strive for better lives and their dependants. This requires that each one of you be there for the other. By respecting traffic rules, you are respecting human life,” he added.
Theogene Ndagijimana, a commercial motorcyclist in Gicumbi urged his colleagues to value their lives by riding carefully.
“Our business profession is done in a safe and secure environment, it’s therefore necessary to have an active role to selflessly guard what has achieved, and this can be possible if even those using the same roads are safe from accidents,” Ndagijimana said.
The exercise also included community policing messages against crimes like drug abuse and gender based violence, where drivers and motorcyclists were reminded to be vigilant not to transport wrongdoers and illegal goods.
